How to pack for Marrakech

Packing for a trip is always stressful, but I have never had a trip more difficult to pack for than Marrakech. The temperatures sweep from freezing to boiling in one day, and the culture has certain standards of dress for women. All of this considered, it takes more forethought to pack a well-prepared luggage. I’ll be honest, I definitely did not accomplish this on our first trip to Marrakech. But, I am here to share what I learned worked well and what I wish I had brought. This is more for the ladies, but if you're a guy who likes to wear dresses and skirts, I'm not here to judge ;)
GAME PLAN
Layered outfits
The mornings are frigid, but the high-sun quickly warms the land. Once it begins its decent, the cold quickly regains ground. If you are out all day exploring, you will want a light layer underneath something that will keep you warm.
Be culturally respectful
Morocco is a Muslim country which requires women to cover all but their hands and face. Marrakech is accustomed to tourists, so not all women are dressed like this, nor are they expected to. But, in order to be respectful, a certain level of consideration ought to be taken. Best rule-of-thumb is to wear items that cover your knees and shoulders.
Keeping these two things in mind, here are the staple items that ought to be in your luggage.
Long skirts or dresses These will be nice and airy for hot afternoons, and long enough to be appropriate. If your dress has thin straps, pair it with a cardigan or a scarf to cover your shoulders.
Long, loose pants These will keep you cool in the hot afternoons, but cover your legs - an alternative to shorts that will be more culturally appropriate.
Leggings I wore these almost every day. Pack leggings for Marrakech to wear underneath your long skirt or dress. These will let you wear the cute, flowy dress your brought, but also keep you warm in the cool mornings and evenings.
Closed-toed shoes Sandals are nice when it is hot, but be aware that the streets are very dusty. At least pack one pair of closed-toed shoes or tennis shoes. These will also be necessary if you do one of the popular activities in Marrakech such as dessert tours by camel or 4-wheeling.
A variety of T-shirts A light-weight top to cover the shoulders that you can layer with anything.
Cardigan or light sweater Definitely pack a couple cardigans or light sweaters for Marrakech - they layer easily over a t-shirt or dress. I had a grey one that I frequently put over my outfit for the chilly moments.
Jacket Of course, you will want a jacket at some point in your trip. Pack one that pairs well with your sweaters in case you need to double-up.
Scarf Having a scarf on you is an easy, and stylish, way to keep warm that you can wrap around your head, neck, or shoulders. You can also wait to buy one in Marrakech. There are many beautiful options in the souks!
Jeans or long pants Pack for Marrakech at least one pair of jeans or long pants. You will want these when walking around in the cool evenings. Also, if you go on a camel ride or a quad tour, you will need a pair of long pants.
Swim suit If you plan on indulging in either a pool or a Hamman spa while in Marrakech, you will need to pack a swimsuit. Most, if not all, the hotels and riads have swimming pools, and Hammans are a popular indulgence.
Sunglasses or hat
Pack one, or both of these, for Marrakech to help protect against the bright sun. They are nice to have just walking around or when enjoying the one of many nice rooftop and outdoor cafes.
Bag (that closes shut) You will be adding and shedding layers throughout the day, so bring a comfortable bag to carry these items. One that zips or closes shut is always preferable while traveling to avoid being an easy target for a pickpocket. The souks also have a great variety of bags if you’re interested in buying one in Marrakech.
Now, you are prepared to start packing for Marrakech! Get ready for an adventure. What else are you putting in your luggage?
